The first appearance of ankle boots dates back to the Victorian period when the official name "Jodhpur" was used. However, we still know their name today as rather "Chelsea" boots which simply mean ankle boots. A significant moment for ankle boots was represented by actual discovery of vulcanised rubber in 1839 by Charles Goodyear in Springfield, Massachusetts. This subsequently opened the gates of success to Queen Victoria's shoemaker, J. Sparkes- Hall who was the first to design real ankle boots in 1851. To ensure uniqueness of his idea he had the design of elastic ankle boots patented. On this occasion he stated that it was the Queen Victoria who walked in them daily and thus gave the strongest proof of the value she attached to the invention.
