From Eskimos up to now

Let´s look at the history of boots. Did you have an idea that the origin of women's boots is linked to an old Inuit culture? According to these data we could easily classify them as being the oldest type of footwear. Their origin was certainly conditioned with the need to have warm footwear, mainly in countries with cold conditions like Russia. The boots outbreak started, however, much later.

The 16th century brought riding boots on the scene. These boots with cuffs were very high, reaching up to the thighs. This type of boots was obviously adaptable for shorter people and if needed, the boots could be easily rolled up. However, boots were not a fashion trend at that time. They were mainly used as working footwear and were enjoyed by military members. Women, on the other side, had still to wait for their opportunity to wear them.

In the 17th century, leather boots became the footwear of choice for wealthy and successful men who even wore heeled ones. Ladies of those times preferred, on the contrary, flat shoes. Shoe trends began to be followed at that time. It meant that boots differed in various coloured applications, woven patterns, buckles and height of the heel. Shape of the boots also changed. Rounded toes being abandoned and square or pointed toes, particularly popular among ladies, stood out. Wealthy ladies could afford boots embroidered with silk, velvet or satin and decorated with distinctive laces.

Next important fashion wave affecting women's boots took place in the 19th century. Black colour became dominant and ankle boots found their place as the fashion trend. These boots were designed with elastic sides which were in 1860 replaced by lacing. To give them more elegant look laces were made of satin or coloured leather. They were tied around the ankle and calf thus enhancing the overall feminine impression. A very attractive pair of boots, the so-called 'barrette' boots, looked like slippers or ballet shoes and their height was adapted with the stocking. This was supported with soft leather straps along the whole fabric. After 1920, however, these eccentric and purely feminine features of boots disappeared, and more practical role of boots returned. Thus, until almost 1970, their use was oriented towards men's needs in form of military or cowboy boots. Since then, we may say that boots have been successfully incorporated and presented as fashion footwear, which has enjoyed its popularity and various designs of fashion designers.

Find the right pair

Women's boots are considered one of the most basic type of women´s footwear. If we compare this footwear with half-boots or ankle boots the result would be as follows: the term boots characterises a shoe which reaches above the ankle, some types are above the knees. It is up to you what kind of boots you choose. Boots have always had one major benefit. They protect our feet against cold, strong wind or uncontrolled heavy raindrops. Winter boots are classified, inter alia, according to their height: they may be ankle boots, above knee boots, resp. boots above the knees, so called „over the knee“ ones.

To be able to decide, attention must be paid to the width of the upper. It is also important how the boots fit when you put them on. It is all about making sure that they are not too loose, but they wrap your foot comfortably. Only then they are the right ones for you. Concerning boots with long upper and no lacing or a zip, such part needs to be wide enough for your foot, otherwise you won't be able to put the shoe on. The upper width is also important in terms of calf thickness.

When choosing boots their purpose should also be considered. Boots to wear with skirt, for instance, should wrap your legs nicely, but if you look for boots to wear with trousers leave a small width space. Boots differ in their way of fastening. There are boots with no fastening or boots with a zip. The zip is usually on the inside of the shoe and may go along the entire length, or there are boots with a small zip combined with other way of fastening for their easier putting-on. There are also lace-up boots available on the market. These laces, in addition to their functional role, play an aesthetic role as they decorate the boot.

Women's boots come in various heel designs. Wide-heeled boots, stiletto-heeled boots, wedge-heeled boots as well as platform boots. In addition to the heel type we also pay attention to its height. This could be summed up in three levels. Flat boots range in height from 1 to 2 cm, low-heeled boots are of 2 to 5 cm and boots with over 5 cm heel are high-heeled boots.

If you are looking for boots to wear in very cold winter, they must be perfectly insulated and have a wide heel in order to avoid any unpleasant accidents and provide a feeling of stability. When you dream of stiletto and high-heeled boots, this is the right choice for dry weather when you are not in any danger of accident. There are no limits as far as boot materials are concerned. Leather boots are the most common ones followed by velour, lacquered or suede ones. Materials may also be well-combined to give the boots a trendy chic. Nowadays there are boots available in their classic black colour, fancy brown, but also in more extravagant colours. Women's boots are often decorated with dominant patterns, buckles, or other applications coming from creative workshops of fashion designers. Just choose!
