History of women´s footwear

The earliest known women´s shoes were sandals and boots made of freshly processed leather, which, in addition to protecting the foot from outside effects they also protected against cold. The predecessors of high-heeled shoes were the so-called 'cothurns', which date back to the Antique times and so called 'qabqab' which again represented extremely high shoes of the Near and Middle East. Later narrow shoes with an elongated pointed toe came on the scene. This toe determined social status of the wearer and could reach as much as 75 cm. The longest pointed toes could be worn by the rulers and their closest relatives; no one else had this privilege. The nobility of the royal court was allowed a toe length of 30 as a maximum.  However, the serfs could wear shoes with 15 cm pointed toe. Long-toed shoes were later replaced by square-toed shoes. Gradually, the selection of women's footwear became wider and there was a choice of ankle-boots, sporty shoes and boots. At those times already there were no limits as far as fantasy and imagination was concerned and shoes were designed in combination of various materials available. They were interesting, original and playful. Creativity of shoe designers progressed and features distinguishing the gender of shoes became more obvious. Ladies just knew on which shoe models to draw their attention. Nowadays the toe length, heel height or any decoration does not determine any lady's status.
